“To help states, provinces, regions and other sub-national governments around the world develop, implement, and communicate low-carbon and climate resilient economic development projects, policies, and best practices.”

R20’s bottom-up approach enables local governments to implement a multitude of projects that can only be managed at the local level. Sub-national priority areas may include: clean public transportation, energy-efficiency in public buildings, LED street lighting, wind energy, micro-hydro power, solar energy, and waste-conversion projects. Such projects often fall in the hands of mayors and/or leaders of districts, regions or provinces. Moreover, recent research published by UNDP shows that 75% of potential solutions for a low-carbon economy lie with sub-national governments.
